Approach to the Curatorship of Virtual Reality Exhibitions

Virtual reality, as a new way and language to represent and communicate stories, is a practice and technique that generates an artificial computer‐simulated environment that takes the spectator into a deep immersive experience. In this chapter, there is first an introduction to various approaches to the concept of extended reality (XR) and virtual reality (VR). Second, the chapter charts and analyzes different curatorships of VR exhibitions in contemporary art and storytelling mainly in Europe and the US. This approach will show the different strategies taken by both curators and artists when displaying their work in an immersive and innovative way, and the specific needs and implications involved in this kind of new curating. In the conclusion, some proposed ideas and insights on curating and exhibiting in this specific format are discussed.
